By far the most important Feng Shui principle is the theory of yin and yang. Yin and yang basically means the polarity of the opposites – you cannot have one without the other.
Every downside has an upside as every upside has the downside; There are two sides of every coin; Every problem has a solution; Every material thing started with an idea. As you see, there are two sides of everything and these polarities in Feng Shui are called yin and yang.
Everything also has its cycle – night replaces day and winter replaces summer, happiness replaces sadness and winnings replace losses. There is the birth and then death follows. This shows that yin and yang are separate, but they are still connected to each other. One could not exist without the other.
Yang represents one side of a coin and yin – another. Yang represents male, yin – female. Yang represents birth, yin – death. Yang is active, yin – passive.
The philosophy behind The Book of Changes is the first known attempt to formulate a systematized understanding about the interaction of the opposites (yin and yang). This book was used to predict future and it also showed what changes you need to make to avoid the unwanted future.
Yin and yang in your home
The fundamental Feng Shui principles of yin and yang can help you harmonize your environment.
When your environment is balanced, you will notice that your health and well-being in general will improve.
To harmonize your environment using this principle you should check for any imbalances in your home.
Imbalances occur when one or two elements dominate your home. There are five Feng Shui elements in total, which are: water, wood, fire, earth and metal. Check this article for a detailed explanation of these elements.
These five elements have certain colors associated with them. You can find each element’s color(s) on the link to the article above. For example, the colors of the water element are black and blue. So if you have a lot of black items and containers with water in one room or in the whole house, you should balance that by introducing the neutralising symbol, which in this case would be the wood element.
There can be other imbalances in your home too, for example, your home may have too many items in one place and almost none in another. In this case you should distribute the items proportionately and that will create harmony.
When your home is too much yin or yang, you will start feeling negative or your health may worsen. For example, if you have too much yang energy in your home, you may feel aggressive or wanting to do many things at the same time. If your home has more yin energy, you may feel sleepy and you may have the habit of daydreaming.
